This is Tesla’s all-new Electric Truck – The Tesla Semi

Electric Car specialist Tesla has revealed a prototype of a truck ‘Tesla Semi’ equipped with a semi-autonomous driving system that it will start producing in 2019.

The company’s chief executive, Elon Musk, revealed the big-rig truck, gave the Tesla Semi, to car owners and potential buyers at a Los Angeles airport hangar.

A/C to him the electric trucks were behind the car manufacturer’s latest efforts to move industries away from using fossil fuels. Tesla’s latest venture has been greeted with some trepidation from analysts, who fear that it could be an expensive distraction for the company, which will never give annual profit. Electric trucks aren’t the exclusive purview of Musk and Tesla, of course! Also, there is somewhat trollishly named Nikola, which is working on a hybrid hydrogen-powered electric powertrain, which it is building with Bosch. Another company, Daimler, has revealed its own concept for a Mitsubishi E-FUSO fully electric Vision One truck with 220 miles of range, but with no specified release window.

Tesla says its electric trucks will be cheaper to run than diesel. Musk has not yet revealed a price for the electric prototype. But he said that the trucks could go up to 500 miles at maximum weight at motorway speeds, despite fears heavy batteries could eat into the weight of cargo capacity.Without cargo, the Semi can go from 0 to 60mph in five seconds or reach 60mph in 20 seconds while carrying the maximum weight allowed on US highways – more than 36,000kg. Class 8 is the heaviest weight classification for trucks, Tesla showed off the Class 8 truck, which is capable of hauling any kind of bulk i.e, load.It comes equipped with a semi-autonomous driving system designed to prevent the truck drifting out of its lane as well as enabling it to switch lanes on command.

Ahead of the launch of the truck, which can travel 400 miles on a 30-minute charge, Musk tweeted:

In the same Tesla Semi event, Tesla also revealed its new Roadster model, which can go from 0 to 60mph in 1.9 seconds.

With a million mile warranty against any breakdowns on every truck, Tesla is doing its best to convince people that change is a good thing.
